Everyone Thought She Was Pregnant — Until Vets Discovered More Than 10 Liters of Fluid Inside Her

For months, people in the neighborhood watched the stray dog move slowly through the streets.

Her abdomen had grown so large that most assumed she was pregnant. Week after week, however, the swelling continued to increase while the rest of her body became thinner and weaker.

She struggled to walk.

Her breathing appeared labored.

Even standing for long periods seemed to require more strength than she had.

Then residents shared one important detail with the rescuers searching for her.

The dog had already been spayed.

She could not be carrying puppies.

Something far more dangerous was causing her body to expand.

Her Abdomen Kept Growing While Her Strength Disappeared

The rescuers eventually located the dog and named her Zhuzha.

Up close, her condition looked even more serious.

Her abdomen hung heavily beneath her thin frame, stretched by whatever had been accumulating inside. She moved with short, careful steps and panted frequently, as though the pressure made it difficult to breathe comfortably.

The contrast between her body and stomach was impossible to ignore.

Zhuzha was not gaining healthy weight.

Her legs and upper body remained thin while her abdomen became disproportionately large.

The rescuers approached slowly and spoke in calm voices. Zhuzha did not attempt to run far, but that did not necessarily mean she trusted them.

She appeared too exhausted to escape.

The team carefully lifted her onto a stretcher and transported her to a veterinary clinic, where doctors could finally determine what had been hidden inside her body.

Tests Revealed a Severe Heartworm Infection

At the clinic, Zhuzha underwent a series of examinations.

Veterinarians checked her temperature, heart function, blood results, and abdominal condition. Ultrasound imaging and physical assessments helped the team understand why her stomach had continued expanding.

The diagnosis was advanced heartworm disease.

Heartworms can place significant strain on the heart and nearby blood vessels. In Zhuzha’s case, the disease had weakened her cardiovascular system so severely that fluid was accumulating inside her abdomen.

This buildup, known as ascites, had created the appearance of pregnancy.

But there were no puppies inside.

Her enlarged abdomen was filled with fluid caused by serious illness.

As the pressure increased, ordinary activities became more difficult. The fluid limited comfortable movement and pushed against areas involved in breathing, helping explain why Zhuzha panted and tired so easily.

The veterinary team knew that medication alone would not bring immediate relief.

The pressure inside her abdomen had to be reduced.

More Than 10 Liters of Fluid Were Removed

Doctors began an emergency drainage procedure.

Zhuzha was positioned carefully while the medical team removed the accumulated fluid from her abdomen. The process had to be controlled and closely monitored because her weakened heart and overall condition left little room for additional stress.

The amount removed was extraordinary.

More than 10 liters of fluid had been weighing down her body.

As the drainage continued, the enormous swelling gradually diminished. Zhuzha’s shape began to change, revealing how much of her apparent size had come entirely from the buildup inside.

The procedure did not cure the underlying heartworm disease.

Her heart had already been affected, and she would still require medication and supervision.

But reducing the pressure offered something she urgently needed.

Relief.

Afterward, Zhuzha appeared able to rest more comfortably. Her breathing became less strained, and moving no longer meant carrying the same enormous weight beneath her body.

For the first time in months, her abdomen was no longer controlling every movement she made.

The First Ten Days Were Carefully Monitored

The period after drainage remained critical.

Zhuzha’s body had endured prolonged illness, poor nutrition, and constant pressure from the fluid. Removing it helped her immediately, but strength could not return in a single day.

Veterinarians continued treating the heart condition and monitored whether fluid began accumulating again.

Her meals were controlled and nutritious.

Medication was administered on schedule.

Her breathing, energy levels, and abdominal size were checked regularly.

During the early days, Zhuzha spent much of her time resting.

Then, approximately ten days after treatment began, caregivers noticed an important change.

She wanted to walk.

The dog who had previously moved only when necessary began showing interest in leaving her resting area. Her first walks were slow and carefully supervised, but she was choosing to move rather than remaining still beneath the weight of exhaustion.

Her appetite also improved.

She became more alert when volunteers approached and paid greater attention to what was happening around her.

These were not dramatic changes on their own.

Together, they showed that Zhuzha’s body was responding.

Four Weeks Later, She Looked Like Another Dog

After four weeks of treatment, the difference was striking.

Zhuzha’s abdomen no longer had the extreme swollen appearance seen on the street. Her movements became steadier, and her breathing looked more controlled during ordinary activity.

With regular meals, the rest of her body also began rebuilding strength.

Her eyes appeared brighter.

She interacted more readily with caregivers.

And she began spending time near other dogs at the rescue center instead of remaining isolated by illness and exhaustion.

The medical team remained realistic.

Zhuzha’s heart had sustained damage, and her condition would require ongoing management. She would likely need medication for the rest of her life, along with regular veterinary checks to monitor her heart and watch for returning fluid.

Recovery did not mean the disease had disappeared.

It meant Zhuzha had reached a point where the illness could be managed rather than allowed to continue overwhelming her body.

That distinction mattered.

She was no longer simply surviving from one difficult step to the next.

She had begun participating in daily life again.

Her Future Would Depend on Consistent Care

Zhuzha’s condition made her needs more complex than those of many healthy dogs waiting for homes.

She would require a family prepared to continue her medication.

They would need to notice changes in her breathing, appetite, energy, or abdominal size.

Veterinary appointments could not be treated as optional.

But those medical needs did not prevent Zhuzha from becoming a gentle and engaging companion.

As she regained strength, caregivers saw more of her personality emerge. She appeared increasingly comfortable around familiar people and more interested in the animals sharing her environment.

The dog once moving slowly through the streets was now surrounded by predictable care.

Food arrived every day.

Medication reduced the strain on her body.

People noticed when she seemed tired and allowed her to rest.

For a dog whose illness had remained untreated long enough for more than 10 liters of fluid to accumulate, that attentiveness represented an entirely different kind of life.

The “Pregnant” Stray Was Really Asking for Medical Help

Zhuzha’s story shows how easily a serious condition can be misunderstood from a distance.

To people passing her in the neighborhood, the explanation seemed obvious.

A female dog with an enlarged abdomen must be pregnant.

But the details did not fit.

Her stomach continued expanding beyond what seemed normal.

Her strength declined instead of remaining stable.

And because she had already been spayed, pregnancy was not possible.

The swelling was not carrying new life.

It was placing her own life at risk.

Zhuzha could not explain that her heart was struggling or that fluid was building inside her abdomen. She could only move more slowly, breathe more heavily, and continue appearing in the same streets until someone recognized that the situation required help.

The residents who contacted rescuers gave her that opportunity.

The rescue team found her.

The veterinary staff identified the cause.

And the drainage procedure relieved a burden her thin body had been carrying for months.

She Is Finally Waiting for a Home, Not Another Emergency

Today, Zhuzha continues receiving medical care while waiting for a permanent family.

She is no longer mistaken for a pregnant stray.

Her condition is understood.

Her medication is available.

And the people around her know which changes require attention.

Her future will still involve heart management and careful monitoring. That reality should not be hidden behind a perfect ending.

But Zhuzha now has something she did not have on the street.

A genuine chance.

She can walk without the same enormous pressure pulling beneath her body.

She can eat regular meals.

She can rest somewhere protected and interact with people who recognize her needs.

Months earlier, neighbors saw only a growing belly.

Inside it was not a litter of puppies.

It was more than 10 liters of fluid created by a disease that was slowly weakening her heart.

One detail—the fact that she had already been spayed—encouraged people to look beyond the obvious explanation.

That second look helped save her.

Zhuzha’s story is a reminder that animals do not always suffer in ways that are immediately understood.

Sometimes illness looks like pregnancy.

Sometimes exhaustion looks like calmness.

And sometimes saving a life begins when someone realizes the easiest explanation cannot be the right one.
