He Lay Beside a Temple With a Swollen Belly — Then Someone Realized How Much Pain He Was Carrying

People came to the temple looking for peace.

Just a short distance away, a small dog was quietly fighting through something very different.

His name was Jai.

He did not bark for attention or chase after the people passing nearby. Most of the time, he simply remained still, his tiny body trembling as an unnaturally swollen abdomen made even the smallest movement difficult.

For how long he had been living this way was unclear.

What was obvious was that Jai needed help—and by the time someone finally stopped to look closely, his condition had become impossible to ignore.

He Barely Moved, but His Body Was Saying Everything

Jai had become almost part of the background around the temple.

He stayed quiet.

He moved very little.

And unless someone took the time to look carefully, it would have been easy to mistake his stillness for simple exhaustion.

But there were signs that something was seriously wrong.

His body trembled repeatedly.

When he tried to reposition himself, soft whimpers could sometimes be heard.

Most concerning of all was his abdomen.

It was dramatically enlarged compared with the rest of his small frame—tight and swollen enough that walking appeared difficult.

Even standing required effort.

Jai was not a large dog to begin with, which made the size of his abdomen look even more alarming.

He did not have the strength to draw attention to himself.

Fortunately, eventually someone noticed him anyway.

And this time, they did not keep walking.

One Closer Look Turned Into an Urgent Rescue

Once someone stopped long enough to really observe Jai, it became clear that this was more than the ordinary hardship of a stray dog.

His weakness was severe.

His abdomen was distended.

His movements appeared painful and limited.

A rescue team was contacted.

When they reached Jai, there was no chase.

He did not have the energy for one.

He remained where he was as the rescuers approached, watching them without putting up much resistance.

Carefully, they lifted his small body.

For a dog with such a swollen abdomen, even being picked up had to be handled gently.

The rescuers did not yet know what was causing the enlargement.

They only knew that Jai needed veterinary attention quickly.

The temple grounds disappeared behind him as he was carried away.

For perhaps the first time in a long while, Jai was no longer expected to manage whatever was happening to his body by himself.

At Just 3.75 Kilograms, His Abdomen Was Filled With Fluid

At the veterinary clinic, Jai was examined immediately.

He weighed only 3.75 kilograms.

But even that number was misleading.

A significant portion of the weight was not healthy body mass.

Veterinary testing identified ascites, a condition in which fluid accumulates inside the abdomen.

That explained much of what rescuers had been seeing.

The swollen belly.

The difficulty moving.

The physical strain carried by such a small body.

The veterinary team began removing the accumulated fluid carefully.

A pale reddish liquid was drained from Jai’s abdomen, filling nearly two trays before the procedure was complete.

Afterward, Jai was weighed again.

The number had fallen from 3.75 kilograms to approximately 3.00 kilograms.

Around 750 grams of his previous weight had been fluid.

For a dog his size, that was an enormous burden to have been carrying.

Removing it addressed one immediate problem.

But the veterinarians still needed to understand why so much fluid had accumulated in the first place.

The Swollen Belly Was Only a Symptom of a Deeper Problem

By the second day, further examinations provided more troubling answers.

Jai’s heart was enlarged.

The veterinary team also identified problems involving his heart valves and circulation.

According to the diagnosis, these cardiovascular problems were contributing to the buildup of fluid inside his abdomen.

The ascites was therefore not the entire illness.

It was a visible consequence of something deeper.

Jai was also severely anemic.

His gums appeared unusually pale, and his overall weakness reflected how compromised his body had become.

That combination made his treatment especially delicate.

He was small.

He was already exhausted.

And his heart was struggling.

The team could not simply remove the abdominal fluid and assume the crisis was over.

Jai needed continued monitoring and treatment aimed at supporting several problems at once.

He was given glucose and medication as the veterinarians worked to stabilize him.

Treatment Had to Move Carefully, One Problem at a Time

There was no quick solution to Jai’s condition.

His care required close observation.

Medication was used to support his heart.

His anemia also needed attention.

Fluids and other supportive treatment were provided according to his condition, while additional testing helped the veterinary team better understand what his body could tolerate.

Every decision mattered.

Jai had already been carrying an extraordinary physical burden for such a small dog.

Removing the accumulated fluid gave his abdomen relief, but his underlying heart condition meant that continued medical management would be necessary.

The team watched him closely for changes.

His breathing.

His strength.

His circulation.

His response to medication.

There was no dramatic moment when everyone could declare him completely safe.

Instead, his treatment became a series of cautious steps.

One examination.

One dose of medication.

One period of rest.

Then another assessment.

For a critically weakened animal, sometimes that is what rescue looks like.

Not a single miracle.

But many careful decisions made in the hope of giving the body enough support to continue.

Jai Never Needed to Be Brave for Anyone

Throughout his treatment, Jai remained remarkably quiet.

He did not struggle against the people examining him.

He did not repeatedly pull away from the hands caring for him.

Most of the time, he simply rested.

It would be easy to describe that stillness as bravery.

But Jai did not need to perform courage for anyone.

His body was exhausted.

What mattered was that he was finally in a place where being exhausted was allowed.

He could lie down without having to protect himself from the street.

He could receive treatment without searching for it.

Someone else was keeping track of his medications.

Someone else was watching his breathing.

Someone else was noticing the things that had gone unnoticed beside the temple.

For Jai, that change alone was enormous.

The dog who had once carried his illness quietly now had an entire team paying attention.

His Future Was Still Uncertain, but He Was No Longer Invisible

Jai’s story did not end with a sudden recovery.

At this stage, his condition remained serious.

Heart disease, severe anemia, and the complications that had already led to major abdominal fluid accumulation meant that his future could not be guaranteed.

There was still treatment ahead.

There were still questions.

There was still uncertainty.

But one important part of Jai’s life had already changed completely.

He was no longer lying alone beside the temple while people passed nearby.

He had been seen.

He had been carried to safety.

The pressure inside his abdomen had been reduced.

The underlying problems had been identified.

And there were now people prepared to continue caring for him.

Sometimes rescue stories end with a dog running through a yard or sleeping in a new home.

Jai had not reached that chapter yet.

His victory was quieter.

He had made it far enough for someone to notice that his stillness was not peace.

It was suffering.

And someone responded.

For a little dog who had spent so much time asking for nothing, that moment changed everything.

Jai still had a difficult road ahead.

But whatever came next, he would not have to face it unnoticed in a corner again.
