At first glance, it is difficult to imagine Rolf Buchholz ever looking like an ordinary office worker.

His face is covered with piercings. Tattoos stretch across almost his entire body. Two prominent horn-shaped implants rise beneath the skin of his forehead, while other modifications make his appearance instantly recognizable.

Yet this extraordinary transformation did not begin when he was a rebellious teenager.

In fact, Rolf spent roughly the first four decades of his life looking very different from the man people know today.

He didn’t begin experimenting seriously with tattoos and piercings until he was around 40 years old.

What followed became one of the most remarkable body-modification journeys ever documented.

And when photographs from his earlier years are placed beside images of him today, the difference is almost impossible to believe.

Before the Piercings, Rolf Lived a Completely Different Life

Long before his appearance attracted attention around the world, Rolf Buchholz lived a relatively conventional life in Dortmund, Germany.

He studied computer science and built a professional career in the telecommunications field.

There were no horns on his forehead.

No layers of facial piercings.

No nearly full-body collection of tattoos.

In older photographs, Rolf appears so different that someone unfamiliar with his story might never guess the images show the same person.

For years, his outward appearance gave little indication of the transformation that would eventually make him internationally recognizable.

But by the end of the 1990s, something began to change.

Everything Started Around the Age of 40

Many people who become passionate about tattoos or piercings begin experimenting in their teens or twenties.

Rolf’s story took a very different path.

Around the age of 40, he received his first tattoo.

Instead of treating it as a one-time experience, he discovered that he enjoyed changing his appearance and expressing himself through body art.

Soon, one modification led to another.

A piercing followed.

Then more piercings.

More tattoos appeared across his skin.

And over the years, what began relatively modestly developed into an extraordinary personal project.

For Rolf, there was no sudden decision to completely reinvent himself overnight. His appearance evolved gradually as he continued exploring new forms of body modification.

His Transformation Eventually Broke World Records

As the years passed, the number of modifications became astonishing.

In August 2010, Guinness World Records documented 453 piercings on Rolf’s body, earning him the record for the most piercings in a single count by a man.

At the time, hundreds were concentrated across different areas of his body, including his face.

But piercings were only part of the story.

In December 2012, Guinness officially verified 516 body modifications, giving Rolf another record: most body modifications for a male.

His appearance has continued evolving since those official counts were made.

Over the years, his collection has included extensive facial and body piercings, tattoos covering approximately 90 percent of his skin, a split tongue and numerous implants beneath the skin.

Yet perhaps no feature is more recognizable than the pair of implants on his forehead.

The Famous Horns Became His Signature Feature

Two large silicone implants beneath the skin of Rolf’s forehead create the appearance of horns.

They have become one of the most immediately recognizable parts of his look.

But they aren’t his only implants.

Rolf has experimented with a wide variety of modifications, including implants beneath the skin of his arms, chest and hands.

He has even had magnetic implants placed in the fingertips of his right hand.

His tattoos are equally extensive.

Large areas of his body are covered in black-and-gray designs, transforming his skin into what he views as a constantly evolving canvas.

He has also altered his tongue and undergone other highly unusual procedures that most people would never consider.

To outsiders, the scale of the transformation can appear extreme.

To Rolf, however, it has always been something deeply personal.

He Says the Changes Were Never About Becoming Someone Else

One of the most interesting things about Rolf’s story is the way he talks about his transformation.

Despite how dramatically his appearance has changed, he has repeatedly explained that he does not believe the modifications changed the person he is inside.

For him, tattoos, piercings and implants became forms of self-expression.

His Appearance Has Even Caused Problems While Traveling

Rolf’s unusual look has not always been accepted without controversy.

One of the most widely reported incidents occurred in 2014, when he traveled to the United Arab Emirates for an appearance.

He was reportedly prevented from entering Dubai.

The incident generated international headlines, particularly after reports emerged that concerns surrounding his appearance—and even bizarre suspicions involving “black magic”—may have contributed to the decision.

For someone accustomed to attracting attention, it was another example of how dramatically people can respond to an appearance they do not understand.

Yet the experience did little to change Rolf’s attitude toward his body.

He continued adding modifications and appearing publicly.
