She Wouldn’t Leave the Drainage Hole—Then a Rescuer Crawled 100 Meters to Bring Her Puppy Back

The mother dog kept circling the same metal drainage cover beside a railway road in Thailand.

She stopped repeatedly to look into the dark opening, then began pacing again. From somewhere beneath the concrete came the faint cries of a puppy.

The sound was weak, but it continued through the night.

Residents soon realized that the mother was not wandering without direction.

One of her puppies was trapped deep inside the underground drainage system—and she would not leave while the cries continued.

A Mother Dog Pacing Beside the Same Opening

The incident took place near a railway road in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

Local residents first became aware of the problem after hearing a dog crying repeatedly near a drainage cover. When they went to investigate, they found a stray mother dog moving anxiously around the opening.

She would approach the metal cover.

Lower her head.

Listen.

Then walk several circles before returning to the same spot.

From deep below the road came the quieter cries of a puppy.

The two sounds appeared to answer one another—the puppy calling from underground and the mother remaining above, unable to reach her.

A local resident named Chamree Srivichai reportedly heard the cries throughout the night and attempted to help. But the puppy was no longer near the entrance.

She had moved—or fallen—farther into the connected drainage passages.

Simple attempts to reach her from above were unsuccessful.

By morning, it was clear that the situation required trained rescuers.

Video: Rescuer Crawls Into a Narrow Drain After Hearing a Puppy Cry Nearly 100 Meters Inside

The Puppy Was Far Beyond Anyone’s Reach

Emergency responders from the Hook 31 rescue team arrived with local police and began examining the drainage network.

The tunnel was extremely narrow.

Reports described the passage as approximately 45 centimeters wide and 60 centimeters high—barely enough space for an adult to move on hands and knees.

The puppy was believed to be nearly 100 meters inside.

That distance made the rescue much more complicated than lifting a cover and reaching downward.

The drainage system contained multiple passages and changes in direction. From above, rescuers could hear the puppy at times, but they could not see her clearly or determine the safest route immediately.

The team first attempted to guide her toward the entrance using long poles.

The method depended on the puppy moving in the correct direction.

But she was frightened, tired, and surrounded by branching tunnels. Instead of reaching the opening, she remained somewhere beyond the rescuers’ tools.

Above ground, her mother continued watching the activity.

She moved between the people and the drain, pausing whenever a sound came from below. She did not wander away to search for food or shelter.

Her attention remained fixed on the place where the puppy had disappeared.

One Rescuer Entered the Tunnel

As the attempts from outside continued to fail, the team faced a difficult decision.

The puppy could not safely remain underground indefinitely.

The passage was dark and confined. Water levels could change, and the puppy had already spent many hours without reliable access to food or clean water.

One member of the rescue team agreed to enter the drainage system.

He lowered himself through the opening and began crawling into the tunnel.

There was not enough room to stand or turn around normally. Progress had to be made slowly, using elbows and knees while carrying the equipment needed to locate and secure the puppy.

The farther he moved from the entrance, the less natural light reached him.

People above ground could no longer see what was happening inside.

They could only wait for updates and listen.

The mother dog remained near the opening as the rescuer disappeared underground.

She continued pacing and stopping to look down, reacting whenever voices or movement echoed through the concrete passage.

The rescue was no longer visible from the road.

But it was still unfolding beneath everyone’s feet.

The Journey Back Was Just as Difficult

After moving deep into the drainage system, the rescuer finally reached the puppy.

She was alive.

But finding her solved only half of the problem.

The tunnel was too narrow for the rescuer to turn around easily while holding an animal. He needed to secure the puppy and move backward through the same confined passage.

Every movement had to protect her from the rough concrete around them.

Above ground, residents and rescue workers watched the opening for any sign of their return.

Minutes passed.

Then movement appeared in the darkness.

The rescuer slowly backed toward the entrance, covered in dirt from the tunnel.

The puppy was held safely in his hands.

As he reached the opening, other team members helped lift her out of the drain and onto solid ground.

After spending the night trapped beneath the road, the small dog could finally see daylight again.

She Checked Her Puppy Immediately

Once the puppy was above ground, volunteers began checking her condition.

She appeared exhausted from the ordeal, but she was responsive.

Before the examination could continue, the mother dog moved forward.

She sniffed the puppy closely, focusing first on her face and body. Her tail moved rapidly as she continued checking her from different angles.

The puppy responded to her presence.

The mother then began licking her, remaining close while the people around them watched the reunion.

Her behavior changed noticeably from the pacing seen earlier.

She no longer returned repeatedly to the drainage opening.

Her attention was now on the puppy beside her.

For the residents who had listened to the cries throughout the night, the moment confirmed that the dog beneath the road was indeed the puppy this mother had been trying to locate.

The team allowed them time together before continuing the physical assessment.

The rescue had required equipment, patience, and one person willing to enter an extremely confined space.

For the mother dog, the result was much simpler.

The puppy she had heard but could not reach was beside her again.

Why the Mother’s Behavior Mattered

The mother dog could not remove the drainage cover.

She could not enter the passage safely or guide people toward the puppy using words.

What she could do was remain near the location.

Her repeated pacing and attention to the opening alerted residents that something was wrong.

Without that behavior—and without people choosing to investigate—the puppy’s cries might have gone unnoticed beneath the noise of the surrounding road and railway.

Animals often communicate emergencies through changes in behavior.

A dog may repeatedly return to one location.

A mother may refuse to leave a drain, wall, abandoned structure, or patch of vegetation.

An animal may bark, cry, dig, or stare toward a place that appears empty to people.

These actions do not always mean another animal is trapped.

But they can provide an important reason to look more carefully.

In this case, the mother’s refusal to leave led residents to listen.

Listening led them to the puppy.

And when ordinary attempts could not reach her, trained responders were called.

A Rescue That Required Patience Above and Below Ground

The successful outcome depended on several people making careful decisions.

Chamree and other residents did not ignore the cries.

The rescue team examined the drainage system before sending anyone inside.

They attempted less invasive methods first.

When those methods failed, a responder accepted the challenge of crawling through a passage barely large enough for his body.

The people above ground continued supporting the operation while the mother dog remained close.

No single part of the rescue could have worked alone.

The mother identified the location through her behavior.

Residents raised the alarm.

Emergency responders supplied the training and physical access needed to retrieve the puppy.

Together, they brought a small animal out of a place she could not escape by herself.

She No Longer Needed to Guard the Hole

Before the rescue, the mother dog repeatedly returned to the same opening.

She listened for cries she could hear but could not answer.

She remained beside the drain through the night while her puppy was somewhere inside the concrete network.

After the puppy emerged, the opening no longer held her attention.

She stayed near her baby instead.

That change was perhaps the clearest ending the story could offer.

The mother did not need to understand the equipment, the tunnel measurements, or the risks taken underground.

She only needed to recognize the puppy when rescuers placed her back on the road.

The small dog had traveled nearly 100 meters into a dark drainage system.

A rescuer crawled through the narrow passage to reach her.

And above them, a mother waited beside the same metal cover until the sound she had been following was finally returned to her in safety.
