At first glance, Sprout hardly looked like a dog at all.
A thick mass of dirty, tangled fur covered his entire body. It was so dense and heavy that even small movements took effort, and nobody who saw him could tell what breed he was. The dog underneath was simply out of view.
Life Under a Suffocating Coat
The weight of the matted coat made ordinary things hard for Sprout. Breathing was not easy. Walking was not easy. He had lived this way for months, and possibly longer, and every step was painful.
How he ended up in that condition has not been explained. What was clear to the people who found him is that he needed help, and he needed it soon.

Chicago Animal Care and Control Steps In
Chicago Animal Care and Control stepped in and quickly transferred Sprout to a rescue group called One Tail at a Time. There, a team of rescuers and veterinarians prepared for what they knew would be a long and delicate process.
Nobody could simply clip away a coat like his in a few minutes. The work had to be planned around a dog who was already weak.
Hours of Careful Grooming
Sprout had to be placed under anesthesia before the grooming could begin safely. Once it started, it took hours.
When the team finished, they had removed more than 32 pounds (14.5 kg) of matted fur. That is the weight of a medium-sized dog, lifted off one animal. The number surprised everyone who was there.
Waking Up Lighter
When Sprout woke up, he could lift his head freely for the first time in months.
Underneath all that neglect was a beautiful dog. His skin still needed time to heal, and his body was weak. Even so, he came across as gentle and warm, with a quiet hopefulness about him.
Day by day, he began to change. He started to trust the people around him. He started to relax. He started to learn what affection felt like.

A Foster Home With Elisa
Sprout’s recovery continued in the care of his foster mom, Elisa. The fearful, fragile dog from the early days gave way to one who showed joy and curiosity.
His tail wagged constantly. He ran freely across the yard. When someone offered affection, he leaned into it, as though he had been waiting a long time for it.

He also made friends. He played. Little by little, he was simply living, something that had been out of reach beneath the weight of his coat.
Thriving, Not Just Surviving
By the end of his journey, Sprout was doing far more than getting by. Wrapped in cozy clothes and surrounded by caring people, he had safety, comfort, and happiness.
The dog no one could see at the start now had room to move, to play, and to be known. His future looked brighter than it had in a very long time.
