Left in a Crate With Purple and Pink Ears, Tiny Junie Wasn’t Expected to Last the Night

Left in a Crate With Purple and Pink Ears, Tiny Junie Wasn't Expected to Last the Night

The crate sat alone in an open, barren field, dirty and easy to overlook. Inside was a very small dog who gave rescuers almost nothing to go on.

Her name was Junie. She did not cry out or try to move, and her breathing was so shallow that it was hard to be sure of it. Then the rescuers noticed her ears.

A Crate Left Out in the Open

When the rescue team reached the field, the plastic crate was filthy and had simply been abandoned in the open. Junie lay inside, so still that she looked less like a living puppy and more like something already lost.

Her body told part of the story. Sores and chemical burns covered her skin. According to the account of her rescue, they came from lying in her own waste for days, possibly weeks.

Then there were the ears. They had been dyed bright purple and pink.

That color was not a sign of care. The rescue account describes it as part of a pattern of cruelty, saying someone treated her as a source of amusement before tormenting her and throwing her away. Who was responsible has not been established.

Fighting for Every Hour in Intensive Care

Junie was rushed to intensive care, and it was clear from the start that her life was in danger. Her body temperature was so low that hospital equipment struggled to register it. Her blood pressure collapsed. Her kidneys began to fail.

Each time the team steadied one problem, another appeared.

  • Severe anemia: Her red blood cell count dropped dangerously low, and she needed an emergency transfusion.
  • A dangerous clot: A large blood clot formed in her jugular vein, and her face and neck swelled dramatically. Doctors gave her a fifty percent chance of survival.
  • Pneumonia: The infection settled into lungs that were already too weak to fight it.

Again and again, the staff prepared themselves for the worst.

The Tail That Kept Moving

Through all of it, Junie did something the staff did not expect. Whenever someone approached her crate, she wagged her tail.

It was a small thing, and it stood in sharp contrast to the numbers on the monitors. A dog who had been through so much still lifted that tail for the people coming to help her.

One rescuer, who would not leave her side, spoke quietly about what she had seen. “I still don’t understand how someone could do this,” she said. “Just imagining her being painted while she was suffering… it’s unbearable.”

The First Signs of Strength

Junie seemed to respond to gentle handling. She leaned into the hands that touched her and listened to the soft voices around her. Slowly, her condition began to change.

She lifted her head. She accepted food. She took her first unsteady steps.

Each of those moments was modest on its own. Together, they marked a turning point. The puppy who had lain motionless in a crate was beginning to move again.

A Hallway Full of Staff

The day Junie was strong enough to leave the hospital, doctors, nurses and other staff gathered in the hallway. Many of them had worried over her and worked through long, sleepless nights to keep her alive.

There were tears, but they were tears of relief and pride rather than sadness. For the people who had treated her, her departure was proof that the fight had been worth it.

The Next Stage of Healing in New York

Junie’s recovery did not end at the hospital door. She was soon on her way to New York, where her healing continued.

There, she met the woman who would become her forever family. Her “Forever Mama” looked past the dyed ears and the scars. She saw a dog who had endured a great deal and kept going.

A Very Different Life Today

Junie’s days now look nothing like the ones in that field. According to her story, she has:

  • A soft bed: warm, clean and safe.
  • A canine companion: a sibling to learn from and play beside.
  • A loving home: days filled with patience and affection.

Her story began with cruelty, but the chapters that followed belong to the people who fought for her and the family who chose her. Junie is no longer alone in an open field. She is home, and her story has touched people around the world.
