The afternoon in Baja California, Mexico, was dry and still. Wind moved along the steep walls of a wide concrete drainage canal, and nothing at the bottom seemed to stir.
Then a Rottweiler cried out. It was one sharp, piercing sound, and it carried up the towering walls. After it came silence.
She lay flat against the hard ground, unable to move. Her eyes slowly closed.
A Cry From the Bottom of the Canal
A few men passing by glanced over the edge and saw her below. Their shock quickly turned into urgency. A video of the scene began to circulate, and it reached rescuers from The Cantu Foundation.
Word traveled fast, and a rescue team set out for the canal.

What Witnesses Described at the Edge
When Fatima Guevara and her team arrived, they learned how the dog had ended up in the canal. Witnesses described a truck stopping at the edge. A cardboard box was pushed out and left teetering there, with the dog inside.
When she shifted, the box gave way. She fell hard down the steep concrete slope, with nothing to slow her.
“It was heartbreaking,” Fatima later shared. “That cry we heard… it wasn’t just fear. It was the last bit of strength she had left.”
Lifting Her Out, Inch by Inch
Reaching her was only the first problem. Getting her out would be harder.
The dog was heavy and limp, and she was too weak to lift her head as the rescuers approached. Any rough handling could make things worse.
Volunteers climbed carefully down into the canal and worked slowly. They secured soft ropes around her fragile body. Then, with coordinated effort and steady hands, they raised her up the vertical wall a little at a time.
The climb felt long. At last she reached the top and was back in the light.
What the Veterinarians Found
She was taken straight to a veterinary clinic. The team had braced for the worst, expecting the fall to have broken her.
The examination told a different story. She had no broken bones. Instead, she was severely exhausted, and her condition showed deep neglect and prolonged starvation. The fall was not what had weakened her. Her body had been failing long before it.
Now in the care of The Cantu Foundation, the Rottweiler was given a name: Flor.
Sitting, Standing, Stepping
Flor’s progress came in small stages. Warmth, steady care and gentle treatment seemed to help her day by day.
At first she could not move at all. Then she could sit. Then one day she stood.
Her first steps were hesitant and unsure, but they were real. As her strength returned, her personality began to show. She turned out to be gentle, playful and a little cheeky.
A Foster Home in San Diego
Once Flor was strong enough, she crossed the border to San Diego, California, where a foster home was waiting. Her foster mom, Kajsa, soon saw past the tough look of a big Rottweiler.

Flor, it turned out, was a giant baby. Her favorite thing was chasing soccer balls with open, uncomplicated joy.
The dog who had lain motionless at the bottom of a concrete canal now spends her afternoons running through sprinklers and soaking up the sun.
Still Choosing Trust
Flor is now ready for her forever home. The hope is for a place where love is not temporary and where she is never discarded again.

What stands out most is how she treats people. After everything she went through, Flor still trusts.
“She has every reason not to,” Kajsa shared. “But she loves everyone she meets. That kind of spirit… it doesn’t break.”
From a silent canal floor to a yard full of sprinklers and soccer balls, Flor’s story ends where she is now: safe, strong, and waiting for a family of her own.
