The crate sat alone in an empty field, and whatever was inside it was not moving.
When rescuers looked closer, they found a small dog lying still, her breathing so faint it was easy to miss. Her ears had been dyed bright pink and purple, a splash of color that looked strangely out of place beside everything else. She would soon be known as Junie.
A Crate in an Empty Field
The crate was filthy and appeared to have been left behind. Inside, Junie was too weak to react to the people around her. Her skin was burned from lying too long in her own waste, which the rescuers saw as a sign of prolonged neglect.
Then there were the ears. The cheerful dye made her look almost festive, yet nothing about her condition was festive. No explanation has been given for who colored her fur or why. What was clear was that she needed a hospital, and she needed it fast.

Critical Hours at the Hospital
By the time Junie arrived, she was already slipping away. Her blood pressure was dangerously low. Her body temperature had fallen so far that it could not be measured at all.
Every minute counted, and the veterinary team treated it that way. But stabilizing her was only the beginning.
One Crisis After Another
Just as she seemed to steady, new emergencies arrived in quick succession:
- A sudden drop in red blood cells: Doctors gave her an emergency transfusion.
- A large clot in her jugular vein: It swelled her face and neck, and her chances of surviving it were put at 50/50.
- Pneumonia: An infection settled in her lungs while her body was still fighting everything else.
Any one of these could have ended her story. Together they made her recovery look uncertain from day to day.
The Tail That Kept Moving
Through all of it, one small habit stood out. Even weak and medicated, Junie wagged her tail whenever someone approached her crate in the hospital.
It was a modest gesture, but for the people caring for her, it was something to hold on to during the hardest days.
Slow Steps Back to Life
One of the rescuers stayed close to her through the ordeal. “I can’t even begin to understand how someone could do this,” the rescuer said. “It’s hard not to imagine what she went through.”
Yet Junie’s progress began to show in small, ordinary ways. First she lifted her head. Then she started eating again. After that came little movements and, finally, steps. She was no longer only surviving; she was visibly getting better.

A Hallway Full of Staff
The day Junie was strong enough to leave the hospital, the hallway filled with the doctors, nurses, and staff who had been part of her care.
There were tears and quiet smiles. For many of them, it was a moment they had not been sure they would see.
A New Home in New York
Junie’s journey did not end at the hospital doors. She traveled to New York, where a new life was waiting, along with the woman who would become her forever mom.

The Life She Has Now
Today, Junie’s world looks nothing like that field. A warm, soft bed has replaced the filthy floor of the crate. A furry companion shares her days, offering friendship and play.
She was once left in a place where no one was coming, and she is now safe. Someone stopped, got her to a hospital, and a whole team fought for her. The pink and purple on her ears remain the most visible reminder of where she started, but they no longer tell the whole story.
