Lunita Was Left Tied to a Railing With a Wheelchair and a Note — Then Rescuers Found Her

Lunita Was Left Tied to a Railing With a Wheelchair and a Note — Then Rescuers Found Her

A worn-out wheelchair, a bag of diapers and a handwritten explanation sat beside her on a sidewalk in Salta, Argentina. The dog they were meant for was tied to a railing.

Her name was Lunita. She could not stand up and walk away, because she was paralyzed from the waist down. Whoever left her had decided they could no longer care for her, and she was left to wait for a stranger to notice.

A Railing Outside a Grooming Shop

The place where Lunita was left was a public sidewalk outside a grooming shop. She had been tied up and abandoned there, and the people who had been looking after her were gone.

Her belongings told part of the story. The old wheelchair, the diapers and the note suggested that her family knew exactly what she needed. They explained they could not provide it, and they left her without food or water. She lay low against the cold ground, enduring the wait in silence.

A Second Chance That Fell Apart

The rescue group LUBA Salta found her, and her recovery began there. She received a new wheelchair, and in time a family in the United States stepped forward to take her in.

It looked like the turning point. It was not. Her new home turned out to be unprepared for the level of care she needed, and rescuers had to step in again.

By then, Lunita was in very poor shape. She weighed only 35 pounds. Severe infections had spread through her body, mange had stripped away her fur, and painful urine burns had left her skin raw and inflamed. Even a gentle touch made her cry out.

Healing Under a Foster Mom’s Care

A dedicated foster mom took over the slow work of rebuilding her health. Medical baths were used to soothe her damaged skin, and physical therapy began restoring her strength.

Her diet changed too. Fresh chicken and turkey helped her regain weight and energy. Progress came in small steps, but it was steady, and the dog who had been too sore to be touched began to mend.

A Custom Wheelchair and a Purple Tutu

As her body recovered, her personality came into view. Lunita was lively and joyful, and the people around her found her inspiring.

She became known for her purple tutu. A wheelchair made to fit her gave her a kind of freedom she had not had before, and she used it. She ran, and she ran fast.

Her days filled up with new experiences. She explored bridges, played in the snow and joined her dog siblings in howling sessions. For a dog who had once lain motionless on a sidewalk, each outing was a small victory.

Eleven Years Old, and One Month Later

In June 2018, Lunita celebrated her 11th birthday. She spent it with people who cared for her, with special treats and plenty of affection, in a real home of her own.

One month later, she fell ill. She was taken to the ICU, where she died peacefully.

Her time with her true family was shorter than anyone hoped. Her mom later shared words that touched thousands of people: “She changed my life forever. I loved her so much.”

What Lunita Left Behind

Her story reaches past the rescue itself. It shows that a disability does not decide a dog’s worth, and that real compassion is tested when care becomes hard, not when it is easy.

It also shows how much a small joy can mean: a walk, a wagging tail, a breath of fresh air.

Lunita is no longer tied to a railing. The pain and the abandonment are behind her, and she is remembered in her purple tutu, racing ahead in her wheelchair.
