Two Stray Puppies Were Too Swollen to Stand — Then Vets Found What Was Weighing Them Down

Two tiny puppies lay in the roadside dirt, unable to get up. Their bellies were so swollen that standing had become impossible, and even small movements looked like a struggle.

Nearby, their mother stayed close and watched the rescuers arrive in silence, her eyes full of fear. She did not leave her puppies.

The puppies would soon be named Nong King and Nong Thon. At that moment, they were simply two small strays whose bodies could no longer carry them.

Found Lying Where They Had Fallen

The rescuers had not been prepared for what they found. The two puppies were weak and lying in the dirt, their swollen bellies pressing them to the ground. Neither could stand.

This was clearly more than a passing illness. The puppies were in a battle they could not win without urgent help, and the rescuers chose not to wait. Both were taken straight to an emergency clinic.

An Emergency Clinic and a Hard Diagnosis

At the clinic, the puppies’ breathing was faint. They looked hollow with exhaustion, as if they had been unwell for weeks without any treatment.

Tests soon explained why. Both puppies had extreme anemia, with red blood cell levels dangerously low. Fluid had also built up in their abdomens. That pressure was crowding their organs and making each movement painful.

The veterinary team understood that time was short. Their first step was to carefully drain the fluid and ease the pressure that had left the puppies trapped inside their own bodies. It brought immediate relief, but it was only the start of the treatment.

Thirty Days of Careful Treatment

Recovery did not come quickly. It took a full 30 days of steady medical attention. The daily care included:

  • Repeated fluid drainage to keep dangerous pressure from returning
  • Strong antibiotics to fight hidden infections
  • Blood-support treatments to help rebuild their weakened systems
  • Parasite removal to stop further blood loss

The veterinary team stayed with the cases throughout. Each treatment aimed at a different part of the problem, and together they gave the puppies a chance their bodies could not have given them alone.

Appetite on Day Two, Running on Day Three

By the second day, there was a first sign of change. Their bellies were still swollen, but Nong King and Nong Thon began to eat with real appetite.

The third day brought more. Nong Thon, who had been unable to stand when found, ran down the clinic hallway. After the quiet of the roadside, the sound of small paws on the floor must have been a welcome change for the staff.

The progress continued day after day. The puppies’ eyes, once hollow, grew more curious and relaxed as they got used to the people caring for them.

A Permanent Home After the Clinic

Today, Nong King and Nong Thon have fully recovered. Their bellies are no longer swollen by fluid. They have left the clinic and now live in a permanent home with people who look after them.

Their survival depended on supporters who helped cover the heavy medical costs. Without that help, the story would likely have ended very differently.

The account does not say what became of their mother, who stayed beside them on the roadside.

What the Two Puppies Leave Behind

Nong King and Nong Thon’s story shows how much can change when help arrives in time. Their small size did not stop them from recovering, and a case that looked grim at the roadside improved once they received treatment.

Now they play, bark and wag their tails, and the photos of them running show how far they have come from the dirt where they were found.
