David Fredman was driving north beneath the I-70 overpass on his way to work. Nothing about the commute suggested it would be different from any other. Then something near the roadside caught his eye, and at first he assumed it was trash.
It was a dog, suspended from a power box and barely moving.
“I just froze,” David later said. “I couldn’t understand how something like this could even happen.”
A Shape Beside the Road
The dog was struggling to keep his head up against the weight of an electrical cord around his neck. Each movement looked weaker than the one before. David pulled his truck over and ran to him.
Up close, the scene was even more alarming. The elderly dog, later identified as 16-year-old Max, had the cord wrapped tightly around his throat. His back legs trembled, barely touching the ground, and his breathing came in panicked gasps.
David called 911, but it soon seemed that help might not arrive in time. He took out his knife and cut the cord in one quick motion. Max collapsed onto the ground. He was alive.

Carried Away From the Highway
Even lying on the ground, Max could not stand. His thin body shook, and his chest heaved as he tried to pull air into his lungs. David lifted him and drove to KC Pet Project, hoping this rescue would not end in another heartbreaking loss.
What David did not know was that someone just a mile away was already looking for Max.
The Morning D-Von Lost His Dog
That same morning, a man named D-Von had woken up to a pet owner’s worst fear: his dog was gone. Max had been his companion for 16 years, through good times and hard ones. He was not simply a pet but a member of the family.
Hours went by. Then the phone rang with news that Max had been found, and that he was alive.

When D-Von finally saw his dog, the cord’s deep mark was still visible around Max’s neck. It was a plain reminder of how close the day had come to ending differently.
Gratitude and an Open Question
When D-Von met David, the moment was full of tears, hugs and disbelief. “Thank you,” D-Von kept repeating. “You saved his life.”
One question still has no answer: how did a 16-year-old dog end up hanging beneath a highway overpass? It could have been a tragic accident, or it could have been something deliberate. David has his own impression. “From the way it looked,” he said, “it really didn’t seem accidental.”

Authorities are now reviewing nearby surveillance footage to determine whether someone intentionally harmed Max. No conclusion has been reported.
What Is Known About Max Now
For now, Max is safe. He is resting beside the man who has loved him for 16 years and recovering from a day that nearly became his last.
The facts are limited, but they are clear. A driver saw something at the roadside and stopped instead of continuing to work. His quick decision gave an elderly dog the chance to go home.
